The Strangers: Chapter 1 is a horror and suspense movie that will serve as a reboot for the franchise that began all the way back in 2008 with the original movie of the same name The Strangers (2008), its from this movie that we got the iconic masks from the people who terrorize a young couple during the vacations, ten years latter we get a second movie The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018) that serve as a sequel keeping similar plot in a different location and new set of characters. The franchise out of the horror fans never had great online scores and the plot is bit repetitive, basically telling the same story just on different location but the key factor is how actors performance the direction is extremely important, it becomes predictable so the surprise element is key for its success.

This time around a reboot is about to happen with director Renny Harlin who has a couple of good movies under his belt like Mindhunters (2004), Cliffhanger (1993), Exorcist: The Beginning (2004), Harlin has a lot experience producing and directing since the 80s, from the trailer there are already some angles and zoom in from certain scenes that I already like. This first movie will serve as the start for a new trilogy trying to reinvent the franchise and move forward expanding the world of this three killers, the initial plot will follow the original movie with a couple on vacation terrorized by this three masked strangers. I’m not sure if this is a trend but announcing it as a trilogy from the start might be both good and bad, it may excite fans a lot but if the first one does not deliver then then two others are doom from the start, if interest on the movies go down this could lead to early cancellation of the project and to be honest even the end of the franchise itself, there are many franchise out there that are repetitive at its core but always having new elements that attract the audience.

I’m sure not many may know about this franchise it been so small a the moment with only two movies but the mask are iconic probably people might know more about the masks than the movie itself, this franchise is originally based on a life true story potentially change to fit narrative and style of an horror film. There is anticipation for the reboot and Renny Harlin is the director chosen to give it a new direction, from the trailer I did mention that there are a few scenes that caught my attention like when the men shows to the door but only appears the silhouette same as the kid that comes in the first time asking for a women who doesn’t live there and all it shows is the silhouette like there is a constant shadow? no body ask whats going on? , when they are eating an blood starts to drop from a bird that is hanging at first make it look that its ketchup been splash but its just too much, there are indeed certain aspects that I like already that will make me want to watch it, its all about the details, angles and the sequences on how things are going to happen since we already know how this movie goes.

Boy Kills World is a wild movie filled with dark humor, frenetic action, martial arts, and violence. Similar to other revenge movies tells the story of Boy, right from this point you can tell how humorous and not much sense at times it will make, a young deaf mute who must confront the evil Van Der Koy family that has the entire population under their control. Boy lived through a tragic childhood since the Van Der Koys killed his family, leaving him deaf, growing up to build character he takes some of the voices he remember as a kid as his inner voice since through time I would guess he forgot the sound of them. From the day his life completely change and lost his family he came up with a master plan, a three step plan: step one was to find an inner voice, choosing the last one he remembered from a video game; step two was to become strong, stronger like insane strong; and step three was to join a team because he figure out one person can’t take down the Van Der Koys, his only mission is to make them pay for what they did to him an many others on their way.

Movies loaded with action scene sequences has become a trend, the most recent one was Monkey Man with a similar story of a young boy who fights an entity that hurt his family or people some how, Boy Kills World doesn’t seem to be any different but what caught my attention the most was its humor, they run a kinda purge but its a TV show, this gives me even Hunger Games Vibes, the trailer was very colorful and many will relate to the movie due to similarities to certain fight games comes to mind Street Fighter, the training that Boy goes through Kickboxer (1989), over all I think this will be another hit for 2024 and its great amount of content.

Director Moritz Mohr: A New Voice in Cinema

Boy Kills World director is Moritz Mohr, born in 1981 in Frankfurt am Main, Hesse, Germany, a new director to the big screen from what I could found which was not much based on his IMDB profile and productions that he has work in the past, none of them that I can recall although in the past he has been known for working with short films, some of this projects like Akumi (2005) and also has experience on the smaller screen TV, directed the TV Series Viva Berlin (2011) that has a rating of 7.5 on IMDB so there must be something that Moritz Moh does very well and that’s directing. I wonder who is his inspiration as a director because the same way as the scenes has similarities to other movies I mention on the introduction there must influence from other directors for me the king of commercial gore movies Quentin Tarantino, speaking of the dark humor on Boy Kills World reminds me of Grindhouse (2007), on a similar way from the trailer I can tell how they directly make fun of people they kill by accident, this movie I would not recommend for teenagers.

The Film: A Stylish Blend of Action and Realism

Boy Kills World already has great comments from critics and audience online waiting for its debut on Theaters, if I try to explain its style I would have to mention it pays homage to old Westerns, kung fu movies, and 16-bit video games, now days a very unique blend of genres but its the story that worries me a bit since on the trailer itself the story how he lost his family is not so much clear and that’s fine its just a trailer but the movie has to make sense and be simple at the same time, I hope it doesn’t become confusing for the audience from its root to how he achieve his master plan.

This movie directly touches themes of loss, survival, and the harsh realities of adulthood, this last part I mention because we will see Boy as a kid going through different faces until the point he becomes an adult and gather a team that will help him so the question is how a kid that was raise and train in the country side deal with adult problems and behave like one? well I think we wont side such side of him because mostly everything will end up in jokes, that’s the impression I get from the trailer.

Challenges and Controversies

I get the sensation that this movie will slide into a younger audience that might not be prepare for all the violence and even confusion that a story like this might present them as a young age, this has been brought in the past by critics of how cruel and raw the fight scenes can be at times along with its dark humor, the movie also brings in the image of an unjust society causing even more confusion to the young ones who might even believe this is or could be possible.

The movie did have some step back during the cast, there were several changes before it could become a reality but nothing mayor that could become a big step back, this kind of movies with such unique blend of genres requires certain unique actors who are not your traditional action man who is already impregnated on the audience mind from any other successful movie he has been before and deviate the impression the movie wants to put on the audience mind.

I believe movies like Boy Kills World are needed while the audience escape from the figure of John Wick from the action genre, for some time it was dominated by this character and it was the benchmark for any other upcoming action movie but with the mix of different stories and other actors who in the past has not play the role of a hero who only knows how to kick ass and blow peoples chest with a shotgun over time the dominance of John Wick will start to faint giving space for new and better action movies to create a similar impact on the audience. I find Boy Kills World a movie with a lot of potential but my only worry is that this movie seems a mix of too many others or too many concepts in a single one, for it to be successful will have to make seance and be simple enough so the audience doesn’t get lost, action movies do not require over complicated drama, but other than that I like very much what I have seen on the trailer.

The story follows Abigail a beautiful young girl who appears to be rehearsing her dance, she is a ballerina, after that she is took by her chauffeur to her house, which result is a mansion, Abigail is the daughter of a wealthy man. She is leave at her house and she lock in her room. The scene change and appeared a man driven a group of people to the mansion where Abigail is. The man name is Lambert and is the one that in representation of his client hired the group of criminals, they have the mission of kidnap and hold Abigail in the mansion for 24hrs, the criminal accept the job and demand $50 million for the ransom, Lambert told them that if they finish the job they will received the money and left, leaving the kidnappers behind. The criminals gather at the mansion of their mysterious leader, where they must adhere to certain rules to avoid disrupting the plan. Abigail is held captive in one of the mansion’s rooms, handcuffed to a bed. One of the female criminals engages in conversation with her and felt bad to see that young girl with the handcuff but Abigail just look at her and told her “I’m sorry for what’s about to happen.” After those were words pronounce by Abigail, the doors and windows of the mansion begin to move and close seemingly by themselves, as if something paranormal is occurring, leaving the kidnappers trapped. Since that moment everything change, Abigail wasn’t anymore a tiny, helpless and beauty ballerina, now she look more like a demon, with a huge strength, with a blood lust. Now the hunters are the one that are being hunt and they need to create a plan not to win the money, they a plan to survive from whatever Abigail is. They truly believe she is a vampire and try to kill her in many ways but they realize that she is also immortal because she received a gunshot in her head still alive. This situation is just a game for Abigail but a race against the clock for the kidnappers that are fighting to reach for survive.

This movie was directed by directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin anbd Tyler Gillett, a team that has worked in many horror movies and now bring a new story full of plot twist and great performances. Leading the cast is Alisha Weir as Abigail and Melissa Barrera known for her role in Scream. The movie will premiered on April 19th, in theaters.

What to Expect: An Exciting Horror Experience

The world of Abigail is a roller coaster of emotions, full of plot twist and with a beautiful ballerina who ends up being the villain. In order to follow the pace of the movie, the audience needs to remain in theirs seats to get the answer of many questions such as, who is the father of Abigail? what is Abigail? and the most important question, there is going to be any survivor?. With a dark atmosphere that keep the suspense and tension through the entire movie,also with scenes that will make you scream like watch her hunting every single person in the mansion, ripping them and other scenes that could make laugh like she flying or dancing with a dead body, Abigail is one of those movies that wants to be recognized as the best horror film of 2024 and probably with the great direction and the committed cast can achieve that distinction.

Kathryn Newton joins the cast as Sammy, Newton is known for her roles in various TV series, such as Louise Brooks in Gary Unmarried (2008) and the older version of Claire Novak in Supernatural but the one I might remember the most was her performance in Paranormal Activity 4 that based on small search that I made won her the Young Artist Award for Best Leading Young Actress in a Feature Film, also been known for playing Cassie Lang in Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, demonstrating not the best movie to been known for based on its rating but its a Marvel movie after all.

Giancarlo Esposito, who now days is playing the role of Parish on the TV series with the same name, this time plays Lambert in Abigail, but he is best known for his role as Gustavo Fring in on of the most famous TV series ever Breaking Bad and its sequel, Better Call Saul, Esposito has an extensive experience and commanding presence bring complexity to the character of Lambert.

This are some of many talents that we will see on the movie Abigail, a combination of seasoned actors and rising stars who overall will have to deal with the little monster that is Abigail.

Behind the Scenes: Creating Abigail

The creation of Abigail came from the idea of developing a monster thriller movie for Universal Pictures. The director wanted to do a reboot of the 1936 Universal Classic Monsters movie Dracula’s Daughter. They also stop the filming of Scream V just to focus on this project. The development of the movie started on April 2023 and at the same month was hired almost all the cast and the last member of the cast was included on June, completed the cast the filming began that same month in Dublin, Ireland. The cast and staff worked without hesitation, completing the filming of December 2023. At the end of the project the direction, production staff and the cast felt happy because the gave everything of themselves to perform deliver a great horror movie.

Abigail is one of those horror movies that audience will totally enjoy for its twisted ideas and the great performances that the cast gave to deliver a good movie. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett known for their expertise in the horror field in the cinema industry are giving to the audience the opportunity to meet a new monsters, a one that was really unexpected for the idea that look like a fragile and precious girl and who is a ballerina dancer, a normal girl with a normal passion but with a wealthy family. The story follow Paul’s and his twin son Thomas and Joseph, living in a remote farm, away from any kind of conflict. The world has an excess of pollution caused by humans but the worst in that are also some creatures that know are living in the planet, those monsters hunt and kill any living beings in their path. Paul and his sons daily routines are almost the same, looking wood in the forest, drive for the farms fields to see is something new or different happen and reinforce all the system of barriers Paul’s has created to keep the house secure during the night, there’s also an important rule that they most follow be in the house before sunset to be safe. Despite all the rules Paul sons are teenager and as teenager they are not extent of do stupid things even though the world is ending. Thomas has visited a location where he met Charlotte and they create a nice relationship, she live in a fortified community and Thomas go there every time he can until one day something unexpected happen Thomas doesn’t arrive to his house on time because he felt into a slit and find himself trapped in the woods in the night, afraid for what could happen to his son Paul’s didn’t think to much and leave the house in search of Thomas and Joseph is going as well to save his brother. When they finally found Thomas he was surrounded by a monsters, Paul decided to create a distraction so his sons can run together away from there but while doing that Paul get injured and the monster attacked him so his sons fight against them and save his father and start looking for help. Since this moment Paul, Thomas and Joseph decided that they are tired of hiding and decided to fight for their freedom and their life. We are going to witness a family union fighting together embracing fear, darkness, courage and hope.

The movie was directed by Benjamin Brewer a director that is a visual effects specialist and that has a fabulous way to make the cast work in a healthy environment, leading the cast is Nicholas Cage as Paul, the father that will fight and die if it is necessary for his sons, also an actor that welcomed the younger generation of actors that work with him in this movie. Arcadian will premiered on April 12th, in theaters.

Critical Reception and Audience Expectations

The critics for the movie are mixed, some are pleased with the great performance that Nicolas Cage gives in this new role and a different one as a single father taking care of their twin sons in a broken world. Also the young actors Jaeden Martell and Maxwell Jenkins create a great synergy giving excellent performances. In addition, the critics mention that the CGI, the action scenes and the creation of the monster were well done with a unique design. But as always, not everything is perfect. One thing that is mention is the lack of information in the movie such as what the monsters are, why they appeared?, where they are coming from?, what is the kind of relationship that Paul’s has with his sons?, why only they are in the house?, many questions that are unanswered, but despite those questions, the truth is that the movie has good critics and the audience seems to be really excited to see how the monsters look and how father and sons are going to live and survive in that world.

The movie is lead by the legendary actor Nicholas Cage as Paul. The story follows Gracian “Gray” Parish a retired wheel man that is living an amazing life with his family, he run his own company and lives in a nice suburban home, he is living the average American life but he is also carrying a pain due to his son dead who was killed a year ago during a shooting but the case is still unsolved. One night an old friend and partner in crime named Colin visited Gray and asked, lets better says that Colin begs Gray for help, he is in a dept with the Tongai family, a group of Zimbabwean gangsters and needs Gray to complete a mission due to he is the most capable driving man that he knows, Gary begrudgingly agrees to help Colin but let him know that this will be the last time. The day of the mission arrived but the initial plan goes wrong forcing Gray reroutes things, changing his clothes and stealing a new vehicle, apparently at the end everything ends well, calling the attention of the Tongais siblings and they trying to retain his services but he always refusing to it. Since that moment Gray’s met the Tongais siblings and realized that he just get involved in something huge and bad that is human trafficking and also acknowledged that he is going to need to drive faster than before all to keep his family safe.

Directorial Vision: Sunu Gonera

Director Sunu Gonera has a story of dreams and determination. Born and living in Zimbawe during the Civil War, Gonera decided to began a journey and follow his dream of becoming a Hollywood director. Everything start when Douglas is arrested by the police and is questioned by police psychologist Evelyn, Douglas decided to tell her his story. The story moves forward and now Douglas tell his story when he live the the children home, there he met Salma a young actress and drama structure who presents Shakespeare to Douglas, she taught him how performance and disguise can help him overcome all the abuse suffered as a child, he was happy with her presence but suddenly she just dissapear never come back to the children home and he felt lonely again. Time passed and he grow up becoming in a person with two life during the nights he was a drag queen who performance the French chanteuse Edith Piaf to lip sync her song La Foule but his other life was as a “Dogman” a person who loves dogs, has plenty of them and teach them to steal from the reach, sounds like modern Robin Hood but he is not, Douglas is a bad person that is trying to do whatever it takes to have a better life because the only that he lives as child was horrible. Let see how the life of Douglas and his dogs end.

The premise of this story is unique but not something new, a person that has suffered so much since he was a child for all the abuse received from his father just because he love dogs, that child growing also create an unbreakable bond with those canines that as an adult has become their family, making them the shield that protect Douglas and the feet that steal everything he wants. The movie follow Ollie Cross in his new life as a paramedic, he decided to do this job because is going to help him in paying his studies, he want to be a doctor and to gained experience. Cross is presenting with Gene Rutkovsky that man that is going to be his partner in the night shift, Rutkovsky better know as Rut is a veteran paramedic that has seen everything and nothing can surprise him anymore for that reason Rut decided to say to Cross “Beware of black flies, they the first to smell death”, Cross didn’t quite understand what was Rut trying to say to him but life is going to show him that lesson. The first call of the night was received and the team of paramedics prepared to attend the call, a moments late they arrived in a abandoned apartment where unfortunately they couldn’t do much because the person was already dead, they then start the process of removed the movie and take it to the morgue in the ambulance Rut asked to Cross if that was the first time that he ever watched someone he knew actually die and Cross replies yes, his own mother that committed suicide when he was a child. The story will continue showing the colleagues in his job every night trying to do the best they can in situation such as the abused and beaten wives, the drug addicted, the ignored immigrants and the though gang members that sometimes make they job more difficult. Cross is living all this during the night but during the day he is struggle to commit with his studies and the exams that he has to present. Every night for Cross is apparently a challenge but Rut is there to guide the newbie in hardly job, something things can escalated and touch deeply in Cross like a badly beaten wife that is still threatened by her husband even thought the paramedics try to take her to the hospital or an scene were apparently a pregnant heroin user gave birth but the baby born dead, this case of scenarios continue every night making Cross realized the New York is not what is seems in the surface in the darker halls exist a different world, a world full of cruelty, suffering, people trying to survive and two paramedics trying to save the most people the can. Also the movie will show a little of the personal life of each character Cross with his girlfriend and Rut struggling with the decision of his ex wife of moving to another city with his daughter.

Asphalt City is an intense movie that is going to show scenarios one after another of chaos, lost, pain and cruelty of society, director Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire want to show a different perspective of a big city that is glorify for many but is a hell for others and a perspective from a paramedic that work in the night shift is the way that he decided to show the audience that New York is not perfect and that reality could be cruel. Asphalt City premiered on March 29th in theaters.

Critics: Too much exaggerated

The movie Asphalt City was premiered in the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 with the name of Black Flies for the adaptation of Shannon Burke’s 2008 novel Black Flies. Critics have acclaimed the performance of Sean Penn and Tye Sheridan, giving emotion and reality to their characters but critics has also dislike for the cruelty and the exaggeration of the job that a real paramedic has to do mention that in the movie they seems to be more like two cops in every crime scene, despite all that the director vision is accepted and the movie is side of a city that also needs to be known.

The movie Asphalt City at the beginning was titled with the name Black Flies that was because it is an adaptation of Shannon Burke’s Novel with the same name Black Flies, due to it is an adaptation director was more careful in the process of scripting and directing to capture the essence of the original story, despite that the filming process was pleasant with a cast that gave everything to deliver great performances. The story focuses on John Knox, an aging hit man that in one diner with his partner in crime but suddenly start experience memory loss symptoms because at the moment that he asks the waitress for a cup of coffee he forgot that he already made that request and has one cup right in front of him, he realized that something was wrong and decided to confirm what was happening. Knox take a fly to San Francisco for an appointment with a noted neurologist and after administering memory tests and a CT scan the doctor has a diagnosis, Knox has a very rear form of dementia with no cure and with a rapidly progress making him loose his sanity in weeks, this is a devastating new for Knox and force him to do everything he needs and want in a race against time. Knox returned to do a mission with his partner Muncie, getting the target and killing him, Knox noticed that a woman was also there and kills her too because that’s the way these things go but suddenly Knox feel that someone else enters the apartment and just like that he killed his partner because he forgot he was with him, due to that tragic event, he was convinced that it was the sign that he got to call it quits, after he cash out the mission he decided that was everything his mind is deteriorating so he can’t continue but the life or destiny was other because one night his son, a son with which he has no relationship at all knock his door, Miles (Knox son) arrived with his bloody hand wrapped in a towel and requesting for help, he explain to Knox that a statutory predator met his daughter online and got her pregnant, so he decided to paid him a visit to threaten him but ended stabbing and killing him. Knox decided that in fact it will be his last mission, a mission to save his son, like a redemption for all the time that he lost as a father. Knox will start a race against detective Suzy Nakamura that is in charge of both cases and that analyzed that the crimes are connected, a race against his mind to complete the mission struggling with the dementia that is increasing and the life that is losing.

Knox Goes Away premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023 and will be released on March 15th in theaters, was directed and starring by legendary actor Michael Keaton, he is giving an amazing entertainment movie about dementia that is not only about dementia, show the life of man that is flying away trying to redeem his absent in the life of his son by cleaning all the mess he created and a fight against his own mind that soon will be off but meanwhile he is going to do whatever it takes to force his brain to work until he achieve his plan.
