Episode 8, Legacy, puts an end to the mini series A Small Light, I really enjoy it, the cast and production was awesome with stars like Liev Schreiber, Ian McElhinney the ones I recognize but Bel Powley doing Miep was the star of the show, she was awesome been funny and such a good friend to the Frank’s, so loyal always giving the extra mile to the point of constantly putting her life on the line for her friends, now days is very rare to see those qualities on a friend.

I’m not going to pretend I know much about World War II or any other war but I have learn a few things from this series, for the most part is a very moving series and Episode 8 in my opinion is the one that will bring some tears out, I cant imagine Mr. Frank’s suffering after loosing everyone and everything, his friends and family who stayed hiding with him for over two years, from the series perspective they were arrested very close to the end of the war between two to six months, but at the time just getting arrested was a death sentence, the Frank’s and friends were all send to different camps, probably lucky for many didn’t have to suffer as long as others that were caught earlier and end up surviving but still that short time was enough to take everything from Mr. Frank, even though it was probably less than a year he lost his entire family, ironically he was the head of the house and did everything he could to keep safe his wife and daughters but end up loosing them and he survive.

Miep stay in front of the business in Mr. Frank absence, so she was not even a good friend but also a loyal employee, she was once told to sell the business, she didn’t owe anything to Mr. Frank but she didn’t and kept pushing, even though there were times when she loose all hope she keep bring it back and kept saying some day they will return home, this episode is mostly about Miep but also is a combination of many people who ran away from the city hiding in the countryside, many who after the ware recognize Jan as the guy who safe them, safe their children and family, he did felt like a hero but he went through rough times too, close to the end of the war the city was in lock down by the remaining German Officers who were taking all Dutch man to work camps so now Miep was the only one going out, she was in charge of bringing food to the table since Jan couldn’t even go out, the worst part of such situation is not knowing when its going to end.

Episode 8 of A Small Light starts with Miep at the German’s HQ, she tries to bribe German Officer Karl Silberbauer after he took the Frank’s but even though he wanted since the moment he arrested them he knew there was nothing he could do to stop it since there were other officers present, there was not much to bribe them all, during those times if he get caught trying to let them go most likely he would get killed and probably on the spot, when Miep confront him another officer probably with higher rank ask him to hurry up the paper work, Officer Kurt, Miep tried to go over Karl but it end up worst for her, Kurt took the money and ask officers to throw her out of the building, at that moment Miep understood there was nothing she could do about it, from that moment she start living just with the hope one day the would come back home alive.

The book is very famous for bringing the memories of Anne Frank, the series brings a more graphic explanation of this, during the entire series Anne kept telling Miep all her dreams and plans she had, goals she wanted to achieve once they war was over and they go out again, for Anne getting caught was never an option, Miep was aware of all this and broke her heart when she went back into the room they were staying and say Anne’s diary all over the floor, she pick up all the remaining sheets and so other books of her, all Anne’s memories, during the war citizens where told to collect letters and safe them as those will be the memories of many who didn’t make it.

Close to the end of the war things got very very tight, there was no food, no money and mostly women and old men were aloud to go out, Germans who remain in the city were taking all Dutch men to working camps, Germans knew they were about to loose the war so they were doing what ever they could to grasp as much as they could, for some who got arrested close to the end they were lucky enough to survive and not suffer for much time, in the case of Jan and Miep they stay together through all this time, that says a lot from both and Miep was now the head of the house, on the series they were always together, had a few arguments but always together during good and bad times, like on this picture they almost had nothing to eat and no wood for the fire, they had to brake a chair to make fire.

Not all heroes wear capes, Jan and Miep became war heroes, not everyone knew but Jan work with the resistance at first to help Miep and the Franks but latter on end up saving a lot of people, sneaking kids out of the city to the country side, when the war was over looks like a good amount of people recognize him on the streets, at least if it was two or three he must have felt very proud same for Miep, what they did for others was an act of heroism, putting their life on the lines for those who didn’t have a voice and could not defend themselves.

The train lines were reactivated and those that were taken as prisoners out of the city start coming back home, some like Mr. Frank lost everything including their houses, at first he still had hope his daughters and wife would come back, visit their apartment now occupied by a young couple, he didn’t ask for his apartment back but only to let his family know he is with Miep in case they come back but one day the answer to his questions arrive, Jan, Miep and the other employees at the office start sending letters and putting up signs looking for the girls and Mrs. Frank until a women who knew them form the working camps arrive and let her know they didn’t make it, this was probably the worst moment of the episode, it was the end of a long wait, not the answer they were looking for but at least their suspense and suffering ended on that moment.

Miep and Jan had a kid called Paul, Mr. Frank stay close to them, he probably move out to another place but they always stay together until his last day alive, Miep lived until she was a hundred years old, Miep was a women who was blessed, she went through all this experiences and had the strength to live for so long, proud, telling her stories of war, how an ordinary secretary did everything she could to safe his friends and family, for Miep nationality or beliefs didn’t mean anything, it was about the quality of the of the person, even when someone was not of her liking she still was fair to everyone, even with German Officer Karl she felt how he knew it was not right what he was doing when he raid Mr. Frank office and arrest them, trust others during the war was hard but she always had this sense to identify those telling the truth and been fair.

I found the Small Light fantastic, not only me but a lot of people seem to like it, an 8.4/10 on IMDB is no joke, I never read the book so I do not know how much it follows the real story but anyone who watch this mini series should know the ending, its very sad how Mr. Frank ends up alone, his daughters and wife died at the camps but at the same time is comforting how they mention that he stay with Miep and Jan, I think Miep could even see him as a father considering that her relationship with her family was very vague after she had to be send out of Germany because of the war and poverty, this series makes you wonder or at least made me ask myself why are humans not this loyal and good to each other, it all comes down to money, fame and power, during those times that I think barely exist, there was no internet, social network, branding clothe I think was not such hype so people concentrate more on each other for who they were and not what they had, I wish I was born prior the 80’s because every time I watch a series from those eras makes me envy and I would trade all the tech we have now to make those times come back, I was born in the 80’s without internet or cellphones, I saw all that tech emerge and how it has devalue society, it will never be the same.

A Small Light : What Can Be Saved – Season 1 – Episode 7 – RECAP

Episode 7 of A Small Light was good but for the most part very intense, although the entire episode happen in one day and its focus on a single moment but probably the most important one of the series and what its really about, the story of Miep Gies and the memories of Ann Frank.

German soldier at the time were like bloodhounds to find hide outs and identify people that were hiding Jews at the time, I wont say it was a skill but at the same time most people were terrified if they were ask by a German officer wearing an SS badge and a Skull on their visor cap, people crap out as soon as they were ask even if they were not hiding people, I’m sure there were a lot that went to jail or even killed just because a German officer suspect there was a chance he was not getting the truth from them.

There is something that was barely mention on this episode that was an important part towards the end of the war, I have seen it been mention on other documentaries and it was how it was a “every man for himself” situation, there was a big pressure from the allies knocking on the Germans door plus they were loosing battles left and right, on the series seems it was business as usual in Amsterdam as German officer Karl raided Mr. Frank office, Miep trying to make some small talk as a gamble to end up Karl’s good side mention his accent and how she was from Vienna too, when they were alone Karl stole a watch from the Frank’s possessions and Miep told him he knows this was wrong and he didn’t agree with it like he was force to do it, I’m sure at the beginning of the War the soldiers and the army was firm with the ideology but as they start loosing ground many German Officers like Karl start to doubt their motives and had that feeling they were loosing but orders are orders so he had to at least make others believe he will stick with the regime and continue to follow orders without questioning.

I have to give to Miep, she was a fierce woman, on the previous episode there were clear signs she was already loosing her patience with the Germans and was not scare of them if she had to confront them, obviously she didn’t want to die so she was smart about it, in this episode Miep again confront a German officer but soon understood there was not much she can do about the situation and the best was to play dumb, pretending she knew nothing about it and survive to then come up with some plan to recover the Franks and she did, she went straight in to the Lion’s Den, she knew once some one specially Jews were taken by the German Army it was very very hard to let them go but she still try her best.

Officer Karl Silberbauer raid Mr. Frank office, most workers at the office were terrified specially Bep, at times I thought she was either going to pass out brake and snitch on the Franks, Mr. Frank employees were loyal to him and stay put until the end but Karl was a very clever officer and probably with experience locating hide outs, but the truth is that the Franks were sold by some one, during the interaction they mention a man called Dettmann at the German Head Quarter in Amsterdam who got the tip that there were Jews hiding on that office, with such intel the rest was up to officer Karl to sniff around and find them.

Officer Karl I think was the star of this episode, they were looking around and couldn’t find the hide out besides the employees were not telling anything so he kept looking, Karl keeps looking, they get to the storage room that had the entrance to the room where the Franks hide, Mr. Victor Kruger the office manger tries to sell them the idea there was a warehouse so he can diver their attention to the storage room but Karl probably felt it was too easy so he kept looking and when he gets close to the floor notice the marks, the bookshelf had to be moved like a door every day and left a mark on the floor so he knew it was a cover, puts his gun to Kruger’s head and force him to open it, Kruger knew it was the end, either he opens it or they kill him and open it, some may say they would not help but there are times that its better to cooperate, stay alive and then find a way to help them from the outside, during those times it was worst because getting detained for hiding people was basically a death sentence.

As member of the resistance Jan went to his boss who was also part of the resistance to get help, rescue his wife and the Franks but during a war like that they had to recognize that they will loose battles from time to time, probably the worst the Franks could do was to stay on the city, Miep hide them for over two years, at first was just the Franks but then the group grew up in numbers and even the man who deliver them potatoes knew Miep was hiding people, there was just too much food bring into the office.

Karl starts talking in German and had an accent from Vienna, specially Miep’s mother accent like they were from the same region so she talks back in German and let him know she is from Vienna too, Karl had sympathy for her and let Miep stay, she tried to persuade him to at least leave the girls with her but it was too late, there were too many other officers at the place that witness the raid, there was nothing he could do to stop it even if he wanted, so he let Miep stay and even ask her not to run away since that will get him in trouble.

The Franks were heart broken, only Mr. Otto look strong against the adversity but he had too, he was the head of the group, Anne dreams to go out again were destroy on that moment when they were getting into the military truck, days before Mrs Frank told Miep she felt there was something wrong and something bad was about to happen, two years is a lot of time hiding and they had a lot of things against them that could make their plain failed, the amount of people living with them, the amount of food they were taking into the office, the entire city was now getting populated with German soldiers but the worst was Tonny Ahlers who was looking for Mr. Frank under every rock to collect, he was blackmailing him, Tonny was confronted by Miep latter on that night, she slap him and call him out.

The title of this episode is very well deserve and that’s exactly what I try to recreate with the cover image of this post, at this point in time Miep is loosing it, the pressure is too much to the point she totally expose herself after a pair of German officers in a bike almost ran her over, she starts screaming at the and call them bastards but they just laugh at her. She had so many things on her plate with Kuno staying at their place as someone not welcome by the Nazi Party, Jan working with the resistance taking risky tasks to safe more people, hiding the Frank family who is now so positive that the allies are close to end the war but only Miep and Edith seem to be the only ones realistic enough to understand there is so much more to happen before the war ends, on top of all this there is Tonny Ahlers a man who is looking for Otto to collect on a black mail scheme that has been going for some time and he has connections within the Nazi Party that can come straight to the Frank’s door, put all that together for a perfect mix of none stop stress yet there is still more coming to Miep so imagine how she could felt at that moment the German Soldiers almost ran her over with the bike to the point she didn’t care anymore, she had to vent out and she did but quickly realize it could be her worst mistake when they stop and one of them pull his pistol. Miep and Jan could probably ran away from Amsterdam when the Germans arrive and be free some where else but they decided to stay, in the case of Miep she couldn’t because her passport was revoke by the Germans but then when she married Jan then they could ran away and live a better life away from the war but friendship and patriotism kept them in Amsterdam, the friendship Miep had for Mr. Otto Frank and the love Jan had for his country, those are the main reasons they stay and decided to help those pursued by the Germans.

There are places on earth where you are constantly in danger, serious danger every day you wake up you don’t know what to expect, some times there are those who don’t even have the chance to wake up as things happen over night, one of those places is prison, in such aggressive environment where most of the time only the strongest and the smart survives you don’t know where will problems come from, either the guards or other inmates, sometimes situations that had nothing to do with you but you are confine to a specific space that force you deal with it, war seems the same but with bigger borders, in the case of Jan and Miep the had an entire city but everywhere they go is a danger zone, things change over night either because the resistance did something that alerts the Germans or because allies hit them hard and Germans decided to rush things, just when people thought the war was getting closer to end, the worst part of it come to them and I think this is exactly what will happen to the Frank’s in the next episodes, Ahlers is getting impatient and is looking for Otto under every rock he can until he finds him.

I really like how this moment represent how things change when Amsterdam was occupied by the Germans, one night this woman was a recognize musician playing the fiddle with a great orchestra for a large amount of people to came to see her, now she is playing to keep the mood up for all those victims of the war, a theater and now serves as refuge for those waiting to be transport to the German camps, most sick, tired, without hope that things will change for better but she knew she had to keep playing, at least there is one person on that room who still has hope and that’s her.

A Small Light will probably go down in history as one of the best Tv Series to transmit the struggles of people in Amsterdam and other places during World War II, all the risks they took to survive and help others, Jan was part of that movement, they had to be ingenious to take advantage of every second, every space, every inch they could to trick the German Soldiers and sneak people, kids and infants out of the city without them noticing there was some one missing, but even Germans also where very smart to the point that they develop this skill set of persuasion, how they walk, how they talk infringes terror on those hiding and running away, most crack right there in fear of what was coming but those within the resistance were brutally brave and had the courage to stand up to the task, here is how a nurse standing across the street pretend to be smoking but the moment the light train comes by she receives a baby through a window and run to Jan so he could take the baby to the country side, then she keeps walking like nothing happen and goes back into the nurse house.

The moment Miep thought things couldn’t get worst a set of event come to her very own place, this is what really make things boil up for her

– NSB Agent is now her neighbor
– Omnia Trust employees come to collect Jewish assets after Mrs. Stoppleman move out
– Kuno is terrible sick, fever and looks like dying making all kind of noises, NSB Agent upstairs
– Two nurses working for the resistance are now hiding at her house

All this within less of twenty four hours, next day she had to go work, walk to the office and pretend on the street that everything is fine, I walk every day from home to work, its a fifteen minute walk and I usually think about a lot of things, imagine everything that went trough her mind during the time she took to walk to work.

Things get slightly better for Miep and Jan at home, Kuno was not dying only had an infection because of some acne probably that end up bursting making feel much better, was gross and bloody too, Jan took the nurses and Max out of the city through the local guards transport, some where working with the resistance under cover and help him get all this four resistance members out of the city. This doesn’t solve all Miep problems as the heavy duty is still at work with the Franks who are now loud, hopeful, basically out of control since they think the war is coming to an end soon with the allies landing on France, getting closer to the Germans.

Mrs. Frank has also hit the boiling point, she cant even stand her own family anymore, cant stand been confine to the same walls, without properly seen the sun, been outside, its been two years in lock down hiding from the Germans and the war still not over, all of the sudden everyone thinks it will end soon because allies are closer to them but they still need to end it and she cant see that happening any time soon, she feels things will get worst, I have not been in any War but have been lock down for more than two years and I know the feeling when at least if you had an exact date even if its ten years from now you can probably take it and wait but the worst part is not knowing when will it end.

This episode leaves me hanging but I think actually I’m sure this is Tonny Ahlers doing, either Otto pays him or he tells the Germans they hiding at the office building, I think that’s what happens next and the reason for the image of a man pointing a pistol at Miep inside the office.

Not hundred percent sure why Boiling Point is the title of this episode, either because Kuno fever or all the troubles Miep went through a single day, its like the war burst at her place in one day bringing all kind of troubles to her door step, every single one of them could get her killed, not even arrested so it was a matter of time before she burst out too and that’s what happen when she start yelling at the German Officers who almost ran her over, considering she was caring an illegal radio to the office, not only disrespecting an officer in public but also smuggling a radio to the place she is hiding her friends, it was the perfect combination to get killed on the stop and she didn’t care anymore for a few seconds, this was probably a booster to keep on going after she vent out.

World War II and the German occupation of Amsterdam is taking the best out of Jan and Miep, it starts to separate them as they try to do their best at keeping friends and family safe but Jan feels that his country needs him.

From the little I know from the book Margo and Anne are big part of it and on this episode we get more about Anne with Miep, how Miep not only keep them safe she also keep the girls hopes and dreams alive but there are stressful moments more now that Jan is getting sucked in into the resistance and this feeling that his country is calling for his service like he has an obligation to stand up against the abusement of the German soldiers against everyone but Miep has a good heart and always find the way to keep things balanced and the right words to give the girls hope that one day things will go back to normal and they will enjoy again their freedom and will have all this opportunities to be independent and in the case of this episode be in love and get married.

Its natural for humans to develop feelings when they are confined to the same space, it can go both ways either love or hate depending on how compatible are, in the case of Anne she is just too young and don’t know what love is same as she doesn’t know what is rejection and failure, things that anyone will experience through life as you get in love with someone until you find the correct match, Anne could be too intense some times and this tip over Miep in a moment of stress and bring her back down to earth in desperation of seen how her husband barely talk to her anymore and just disappear during the day knowing he might be working on dangerous missions for the resistance but to protect her cant give her any details, her worst fear is that one day Jan never comes back home.

Jan proves to the resistance how determine he is and committed this cause to the point that he is willing to kill enemies in cold blood, so is that the resistance members put him to the task and he pass, he is now a valuable asset who not only will do anything to protect his country but has also collected important intel for the resistance.

Anne has her first crush, her first love, she has a crush on Peter a kid living with them, the Van Pels son, but she is too young to know what is true love so this could mean nothing just that she is spending too much time with him on a very close space problem is that Anne doesn’t have the best communication with her mother Edith not because they cant stand together but Anne is too wild some times and doesn’t want to listen to her mother, she only wants to protect her, Miep gets put in charge by Edith, Anne’s mother, to control and guide Anne on this matter making sure that she doesn’t get crushed by deception when things doesn’t go they way she think love is.

It must be hard, crushing to be that age and not only get in love but everything, stay under lock down for so long, not been able to be a teenager, know more people, develop, expand their minds, live life, because a war they didn’t ask for and have no involvement prevent them from all this, confinement can turn the most fierce lion into a kitten.

Jan is deep with the resistance now and Miep starts to feel that they don’t share anymore, Jan goes out comes back late and fall asleep, not because he doesn’t love Miep anymore but he has been blind folded by his hate against the German invasion to his country, Jan feels the need to do something important for his country and help defeat them, the problem is that he doesn’t see that this is bigger than him, bigger than a small resistance group and he should evaluate his priorities, without knowing he is moving away from his wife, anyone who is married or has been on a serious relationship knows that this type of conversations most of the time are the tip of the iceberg, this is the signal when your wife tells you “we never spend time or talk about….” red flag and needs attention.

Miep is a very straight forward women, she doesn’t hide her feelings, she doesn’t hide when she doesn’t like something or some one, she is in your face all times but cant handle Jan’s silence anymore, she is afraid to loosing him and this is one of the many times she comes straight up and ask him to cut the bullshit and talk to her, she wants her husband back.

Jan and Miep must be the most in love couple during World War II, since Miep is an immigrant to The Netherlands, she was considered undesirable by the Germans and her passport was revoked so her only chance to stay legally was to get married, she was desperate and didn’t want to leave Amsterdam, she ask Mr. Frank for his advice and it was obvious, marry the dutch, marry Jan. In Miep style she runs where Jan is working, fertilizing a field with manure, a shit field, there she ask Jan to marry him and explain him the situation too, they were both on the same plan but she thought he was fooling around with her to a point when she told him she can do better than him, it was all crazy but crazy love for each other. Big problem, they got married after her passport was revoked basically committing fraud but the judge who marry them didn’t notice the seal on her passport as in the last minute Jan distract him so he didn’t notice and get them legally married. This shows how close Miep and Jan are, no wonder why she is desperate to get Jan back and focus on their life and not on the war or the resistance.

One night after having an argument with Jan after she found a pistol on his underwear drawer, Miep comes back and Anne as usual had an argument with her mother about what she feels for Peter, Miep that night had no patience for Anne and blew up, crushing poor Anne’s dream of love, telling her the truth of why she married Jan so quick and that love could fail her as its failing for her and Jan, latter Anne’s mother Edith talk to Miep and she vents out about whats going on at home. That night during the argument Jan told Miep they were going to execute a plan that was dangerous and he could never come home to that she ask him to don’t go if he loves her, Jan goes out anyway.

He had enough of the Germans and want to hurt them, Jan cant stand the soldiers on the street and how they treat Jews so he asks Willem the leader of the resistance group is working with to give him a meaningful task, he wants to hurt them, he wants to stop them so Willem comes with this mission to kill a important German soldier but it was a setup to see if Jan was for real willing to do anything for his countrymen.

Going back to the cover image of this picture, the night Anne was arguing with Miep a big explosion, it was the resistance who blew up the Civil Registry Office to get rid of all the records, names, address of their countrymen, Jews and immigrants so it was harder for the Germans to go after them, that night Miep could not find Jan and was desperate, Casmir takes Miep to the bar where the resistance hang out but everyone they ask for Jan said they didn’t know him, news came out that many have been arrested, killed and sentence to death but now news about Jan.

Next day when Miep came to work, hopeless, desperate, devastated, there was a one word letter on her desk, it was in German, Scheißfeld, she knew it was Jan telling her where he was, when she got there the field was now full of flowers, the same shit field where she/he propose to get married, Jan didn’t go to the mission because she ask him but now has to lay low, many have been arrested that can snitch on him

What a great story, this is one of the best drama tv series I have seen, none of the episodes disappoint so far, the production is exceptional, the actors that do Miep, Anne, Otto, Jan are great, there is nothing I can say I don’t like about this series and this episode certainly is one of the best, from time to time you get this series like the Mandalorian where all episodes are a bomb, on this episode the story diverts more to Jan and Miep instead of the Franks and the war, we get more details about this couple, about their struggle, about how much they willing to risk for their friends and their love, incredible story, anyone who reads the plot might think that there will be a lot of talking about the war and the Germans but its not, this is the story of how a couple who fall in love during war and is willing to do anything to help those who are innocent and persecuted by the Germans.

The struggle for Miep and Jan continues, it just wont stop it never will until either they die or the war is over they both have taking a responsibility so big that is starting to tear them apart from each other but they have no other option to cope and survive. On episode four one of my suspicions have been confirm and that is Miep best friend Tess is either a spy or some how working with the Germans, well it is not necessarily 100% exact but her boyfriend is working with the Germans, Tess’s boyfriend has an auto parts shop who do business with the Germans although how deep they are into the War its not been said, Miep and Jan find out at a party Tess threw out and invite them, Jan notice how they were wearing NSB pin meaning they support the Germans in some way besides Tess gave Miep a necklace that Mr. Frank latter on confirm its a Jewish jewelry piece and most likely was stolen from a jew.

Now that we know how war went down during those days its sad to see how brave people like Miep and Jan did what ever they could to help others and most of the time I think it was without waiting for anything in return, they did it because it was the right thing to do, things have change through time and this kind of quality in people you rarely see this days, someone that helps you without knowing you and even risking their lives is something almost extinct, most people don’t have basic manners like good morning or thank you imagine how difficult is to find people who behave certain way or help others just because its the right thing to do, I remember one day someone seriously got mad because I constantly say thank you when ever I see its needed to please, he told me “Stop it, don’t me like that all the time” it felt so weird like I was wrong by doing something right and that’s just a detail of the many things I see every day since I have to deal with more than ten people every day out side of my work, I think if there was a World War III right now more people would die than in the first two but probably because of how we humans would abandon our own people, very extensive topic but makes me sad most of the time when I finish an episode knowing that they will all probably die before the series is over.

Miep got scared to death after some robbers got into Mr. Frank office and tear the place apart, they took the money, took the ration books so now the Frank’s are out of money and food, for Miep this is a big problem since she will have to hustle hard but for Jan is like nothing now that he has this connections with the resistance, when Miep arrives the office everything was turn down a complete mess but her worst fear was that this was the Germans who find the Frank’s hiding place but it was not the case, everyone was safe although when she brake the news to the Frank’s about the money all the girls start complaining when they find out that was Hanukkah’s money, a Jewish celebration they were waiting for but the worst part is that this also created panic in terms of security mostly for Dr. Pfeffer who was thinking about going back home since it was the same thing either the Germans find him at home or at this hiding place that had no special security, Mr. Otto had to step in and calm everyone the F down before someone hear them, all this happen during a Sunday when there is not suppose to be people at the office.

Miep and Jan relationship hit a rough patch since he has been going to church when he said he was going to visit his brother, Miep follow him and find out, its not going to church the problem but that he lied to her although he lied to protect her, the resistance is hiding people at catholic church risking their congregation but in religion doing the right thing is above anything else, keeping this people alive is the main priority and Jan is working with them for now doing small errands after the first big mission he had without knowing having to rescue a baby that was left on a drawer lol. Jan still cant come clean with Miep because that would put her in danger so he apologize for going to church without telling her.

Tess though about throwing an ice skating party at her boyfriend parent house to take a brake from war and everything that was stressful in her life, Tess was a women who doesn’t work and her mother has cancer she now have got herself a rich boyfriend who is giving her enough to survive plus a few gifts here and there, one of those gift end up been a necklace that she gave Miep for the party, they both thought it was a butterfly shape but it was really the Star of David open, a Jewish jewelry piece that was giving to Tess by her boyfriend who is making business with the Germans, Tess knows that much or at least that is what she have said so far, during those times you couldn’t fully trust anyone and worst now that it has been confirm their relationship with the German party, Miep got furious after Jan told her they were basically surrounded by NSB at the party, there were even German officers and could not believe Tess knew about it but there was nothing she could do, Tess was just trying to survive by been on the side of the bad ones during war, she had no job, no money, her mom had cancer and she didn’t want to see her die so she go with the flow and got her a rich boyfriend who makes business with Germans, you can argue that’s the wrong decision and that there is always the option to say no but every brain is a different universe and for her that was the right decision to survive.

After Jan and Miep got out of the party knowing they could not do anything to change Tess and all they could do is stay away from this people who they though were friends both go to visit the Frank’s who were celebrating Hanukkah, they didn’t have much but at least they were alive and healthy but for their luck Jan brought some food and champagne from the party and light up a few faces, it was Mr. Frank who told Miep about the necklace and she freak out running to the canal to throw it away but she was making too much noise, also start to argue with Jan about him lying to her about church and this is when he told her a bit more, not everything he have done but just that same as her, he is helping people who need his help to stay alive and that he cant tell her more than that because it would put her in danger, this cool her down.

Talking about danger, the resistance is planing an attack to fight back and I think Jan is going to offer himself to help with it, if he does that its not too smart and was probably better to tell Miep everything.

Episode four felt a bit dull, it was mainly about Miep and Tess, how and why Tess at times look like living this great life but in reality she is in bed with the enemy, the only moment I felt this fear of someone dying or getting caught was at the start when Miep found the office upside down but for sure the series is setting up for something big, we now know that they can brake in easy into the Frank’s hiding place although now the door has been covered with a book shelf, but this last scene with Jan and Willem and all those grenades make me curious of what facility are they planing to attack, after all the series only talk about hiding people and there has not been much contact with German officers other than the one who brought home the two kids and this other men who is looking for Mr. Frank because he owe him money I think he is the one that will keep pushing until he finds their hiding place, I give this episode in particular a 6.5/10.

Miep and her husband Jan have become really good at hiding people, they have now added to their belt hiding their tenant’s grand kids after their father got arrested at the train station but they have also got very good at taking risks, the nerves you need to have to do what they have done so far, sneaking people and supplies right in front of German Officers, lying to their face but I think the most dangerous thing they have done is trust other people that help them, that first step is the most dangerous having to trust someone you don’t know, someone who could be working for the Germans and putting everything at risk with a single decision.

I sense soon Jan is going to become more than just a messenger for the resistant, I think during those times it all works like a ladder that he climb with every mission he accomplish, he has now gather papers and even safe kids that are not his because he was ask to cooperate, soon he might have to do something more risky all this without telling Miep, if things go south for him the moment Miep finds out she will be devastate feeling helpless because she didn’t know anything of what he was doing and for who.

Like it was not enough that they taking all this risks for Mr. Frank, friends and family now a wolf step to their door, Mr. Tony Ahlers shows up, a man who is part of the German Party NSB has come to collect after he heard Mr. Frank talking about the the war and how bad it would end for Germans, basic blackmail but Mr. Frank cant pay him now, Tony is putting pressure on Miep and the rest of her co workers to give in Mr. Frank, things will get intense soon, this man wont go away that easy.

Jan has officially started working with the resistance, this is making him become more comfortable at taking risks but there are times when he just want to shit bricks of how scare he is, after watching today episode I think it would not be strange for him to get killed since he is getting more expose going out there getting things done for the resistance this increase the possibility of him getting caught, as he become more effective his boss will assign new missions to him probably more difficult than the previous one but Jan is also taking benefits from the resistance so you can say its a fair trade? not sure because he we think about it Miep and Jan had no obligation to help others, they doing it because they want it and is the right thing to do but its very rare the people that will put their life on the line just to help others and do the right thing, that’s quality in a human but some times taking excessive risk can be foolish.

At the Frank’s hiding place things are not going very well, confinement is taking the best out of them, in my case during the pandemic having my two kids with us at the apartment was not hard because they are still little but having two teenagers in such small place might be harder, been on house arrest plus the fear that you put yourself there because they are looking for you makes it harder for everyone, there is also the fact that they have a guess family and a friend so every fight or argument is heard by everyone, there is no privacy and at some point someone will give their opinion on the matters discuss without been ask too, making things harder for everyone, its just pure madness and chaos, Anne is constantly arguing with her mother and Mr. Frank have to deal with them the best he can.

Going through the line of events, remember how dangerous is to trust people you don’t know but have no option because you are desperate and need help, this is Jan who was send to pick up some papers from an apartment raided by German Officers, the guy who send him to pick up the papers is suppose to help him hiding his tenant grand kids, see how none of this people are friends or family or had no tights to them but he is still a good man trying to safe lives, he was told papers, a package in a drawer but actually was a kid, this entire saga of taking risks at some point will led him to think he can do things and that could get him caught, lucky for him this time he wasn’t and was able to retrieve the package.

Hermine, that’s Miep real name, she was also rescue given to a Dutch family to hide her, when she arrive she knew no Dutch and that’s one of the reasons she was so close to Casmir one of her step brothers, funny how her step parents at the start of the series wanted her to marry Casmir, he was the only one who speak German at the house when she arrive and gave her the name Miep because Hermine sounded like an old lady name, they became very close and only talk German at home so others cant understand them, Casmir is having a hard time with the Germans too as he is homosexual, German regime is also against homosexuals at the time so he may have to go in hiding if he cant control himself, Miep tries to explain him this but he doesn’t want to listen reason, he knows Miep has a secret but she wont tell, not even Casmir, must be hard to lie to love ones and keep such secret but then its your and others lives on the line.

This is one of those series I have no complains at all, usually I’m a fan of long series where you have five to eight seasons but with this couple of Mini Series I have been watching like Florida Man, Swarm, The Patient, Obsession I’m starting to like the format, is mostly pure action packed on each episode, not necessarily kicking and shooting action but on A Small Light is the constant suspense of whats going to happen next and if things will continue end in favor of the good guys, how Miep and Jan start to get all this value contacts, people form the resistance but their first German threat has knock on their door with Mr. Tony Ahlers looking for Mr. Frank to collect.

I just notice I have been using Season 1 on previous two episodes and their cover image, Im still working on formats and getting use to blog, only my fourth month.

Miep and Jan are starting to feel the pressure of taking care of the Frank’s while they hiding, they short on food rations, the Frank’s apartment was raided with all their things gone and Miep is having to lie so the girls don’t get hurt from whats going on out there.

I guess those times were different, during those times some one word had a heavy impact on their lives, if something similar happen now days I don’t see people covering up for each other and helping to the point of putting their lives at risk for someone else who is not even family, we recently went through a pandemic and yes people help each other during hard times but its very different that for helping someone hide a military puts a riffle to your head, one thing is getting killed by head shot another is dying from hunger or some illness. Miep and Jan are constantly putting their lives at risk to the point of taking favors from the “resistance” just by doing that alone they can get killed, Mr. Frank mention that this rumors and movements most of the time are promoted by Nazis to get those not in favor of their political believes. The tension and stress must be immense having to think that every time some one knocks at your door it could be the military looking for you to get arrested or worst.

With the girls having existential problems to adapt to their new place Miep has run out of food rations, all of them gone, this is where the real magician comes at work, Miep is very resourceful but for me or I would say anyone is not just the food shortage but knowing that their and now your live is at risk its either a friend, a co worker, someone who “help” you, there is a point you don’t even know who or what to believe since there are more and more spies everywhere working for the Germans.

Miep and Jan start to work with what they got to gather more food for the Frank’s, at first Jan start pulling some emergency food rations from work, those are suppose to be for clients but they now living the day by day with the Franks, Miep just trying to be charming with the butcher and sometimes make up stories of a sick parent to get someone else pity and some more food, at this point everything goes.

Talking about lying to friends, Tess just keep showing uninvited, pushing on Miep to be fun, acting like she has nothing to worry because of her new rich boyfriend, even takes Miep and Jan to party probably expecting for them to get drunk and start talking about the Franks or anything related to hiding jews, every time I see Tess I cant stop thinking she is a spy, her boyfriend too, he even got Miep to talk about who are the good and bad guys a conversation that end up in politics but stop there after they saw a Germain Military Raid how they were taking jews from their homes including old people and kids.

Miep and Jan were told about this place called the Comes Bookstore where there is a resistance who can get them more food rations, Mr. Frank already told Miep this is an old trick from the Germans, start a rumor that give them hope just to catch those out side their law but Miep and Jan still went for it, so far it seems it work, every step they take is a risk, now they have to give in the Franks papers in to get fake ones so they can keep getting food rations, what if this so called resistance is just a bunch of spies trying to lure them in to catch them all, not that I want to see them die but for me this is the intense part, how every decision they take is a risk that puts them to the edge.

Like it wasnt enought that Jan is taking all this risks with Miep but now his boss calls him to a meeting because of the few emergency rations he ask for, Jan gets invited into a group at work who is not friends with the Germans and have a plan to help everyone they can, how do you trust them? again back them peoples word had more value probably thats why Jan and Miep trust so many people, same goes for Mr. Frank, yes Miep is a friendly woman, noble, just, funny and probably gave him the impression she had a good heart but how do you put the lives of your family into someone you just met?

This good heart and faith acting is what makes the group bigger and bigger, first it was just then Franks, then the Van Pels adding three more people to the group and now Dr. Pfeffer what next? the group just double in number, taking that much food will be suspicious at some point and at least is just food right now what happens if they get sick or hurt or worst when there is food shortage because of the war because that will eventually happen. Mr. Frank philosophy after all is that they have to do it, they have to help others if not they will just disappear referring to who they really are as a person, been locked up even if its on a big apartment for many months is not easy and it could easily brake and change people, going through it alone is worst, may be having this many people can bring in a different way to coup with the situation, the worst part is that they don’t know when all this is going to stop, they don’t have a date for this to end.

At the end of the episode this German Soldier shows up with two kids who are the grandchildren of Jan tenant, their parents were arrested at the train station and this Soldier felt pity for them and brought them home, this got me thinking how did he know they live there? they just move in a few days, a German Soldier felt pity for Jewish kids during those days? could that be a trap to find out if Miep or Jan are hiding any more Jewish people? He says he will be back and the kids better not be there so guess where are those kids going? yup with the Franks. Every single scene from now on feels it get things more and more complicated, a snow ball rolling down hill after Miep and Jan , when is this ball will bee too big and get them.

I’m a little behind on this series because I’m short on time recently but this and Silo are getting very excited, on every corner, everywhere they look and every decision they take there is the danger of getting caught and get killed, but they still find a way to have a good time, go out and drink its like even though things can get worst they really cant, this occupation of Amsterdam by the Germans has taken everything from them, they have no peace, no privacy, no security, they cant stop thinking every time some one knock at the door that its a German Soldier coming for them, before this series came out I saw people making videos about how awesome the book is “Anne Frank Remembered: The Story of the Woman Who Helped to Hide the Frank Family” by Miep Gies. The production, wardrobe, music, actors everything is on point, so far this first two episodes I give them a solid 8/10.

A Small Light : Pilot – Episode 1 – Personal Thoughts

This is a Mini Series I was waiting for, I’m a sucker for War movies and series, even thought this was presented as a drama during the World War II its still very interesting, but this is a series I will have to be very careful with I’m going to post about it, there are very sensitive topics about what happen during those times, for me rather than a drama and thriller series I will treat it as an educational series based on all the things that are told, everything that happen during those times, back then things were very tense, there was betrayal, murder, abuse, friends snitching on friends and family to survive, a lot of very bad things inhuman things happen during that time that need to be respected, I might get carry away some times but my intention is not to disrespect anyone.

Because of where this story is develop there are actors that I have no clue who they are but there are others like Liev Schreiber and Joe Cole that I’m more familiar with, after watching the first two episodes got to say the cast really does a great job, have no complains about the cast or the production, A Small Light has been a hit with a 8.2/10 on IMDB as known a very high score, other than the entertaining aspect I cant say anything about inconsistencies on the story since I’m don’t know much about Anne Frank story or Miep Gies the two main characters.

This drama develops in Amsterdam, involve Miep Gies played by Bel Powley and Anne Frank played by Billie Boullet, Miep becomes the secretary of Anne’s father Mr. Otto Frank after her step – parents wanted her to marry one of her step brothers since she had no job and no husband but eventually she got the job as Otto’s secretary, Anne is a young girl who questions everything and have no fear to say what is on her mind. The Frank family had to go into hiding after the Germans invade Amsterdam, they are jew and during those times anything can happen to them, Mr. Frank asks Miep to help them while they hiding bringing them food and medicine which becomes a very difficult task after some time for that amount of people, the amount of people hiding were four at first and then increase with time, Miep has good heart and agree to help on the spot without questioning, right from the first episode there were a few tense scenes that I thought some one was going to get killed. The day before Mr. Frank had planned to go hiding his older daughter Margot got called to work at a German camp and they had to do all kind of things to rush into hiding and prevent her to get taken to the German camp.

Episode one starts with Miep who is the girl in the center of this image and the franks, the girls, Anne on her right and Margot on her left, Miep is about to get Margot to the hiding place first since she has been already ask to report to be transfer to a German camp but they have to go through a military checkpoint, Margot knows what they are facing, they could easily be killed on the spot for many reasons, Margot had no ID, not wearing the yellow start assign to Jews only during that time and Margot she was about to shit a brick and who wouldn’t facing such adversity during war times, with Miep cunning they manage to pass the checkpoint.

This is Casmir played by Laurie Kynaston he is the main reason Miep gets to the Franks, as I mention Miep is adopted and his step parents wanted her to marry Casmir since she got no job or husband, well Casmir cares for her very much besides he doesn’t want to get married to Miep mainly because he prefer men, he gets Miep and interview with Mr. Frank where she has to go through a series of days making Jam since she has no experience as secretary until Mr. Frank explains her she was basically training before she could talk to their clients she needed to know how to make Jam.

Miep likes to party with her friend Tess and on her first pay day she decide to have some fun at a local bar, they went dancing both alone without couple and Miep decided she needs a man and there was Jan her future husband sitting there reading a book while everyone was dancing, Miep tries to hit it off with Jan but at first it doesn’t work, he starts talking about the book he is reading but at the same time she felt he was trying to lecture her so she eventually left without telling him as he waits for her next to the band, days latter they met again after Miep stop by his place by accident looking for a woman who is selling kittens and she wants one for Anne and Margot.

Next day it was Mr. Frank birthday and his wife plan a dinner where some friends including Miep were invited and she brought Jan, they start talking about politics and how Holland wouldn’t be taken by the Germans as they are neutral, Miep was very naive to believe so and Jan remain very neutral by not giving his opinion at all but Mr. Frank already went through that situation back in Venice where he originally is from. Mr. Frank already knew what was going to happen, in Venice they were already discriminated for been jew and if the Germans take Amsterdam he knows they will have to go into hiding, when that happen he already had a couple of weeks working with Miep and understood he could trust her because she was the one he put in charge of his company while he run the business in the background.

On May 15, 1940 a few days latter after Mr. Frank birthday, Miep believed Holland wouldn’t be taken and that they were not in any kind of danger, German troops arrive Amsterdam, it only took them a few days and now the troops and the Queen are gone leaving Amsterdam to the Germans, Mr. Frank already went through this situation and knows the best thing to do is keep working as if nothing has change, at that point in war Germans were strong and had no need to destroy Amsterdam, it seems it was used as a camp on their way to France, I’m no expert on the matter so I might be wrong about it, at least that’s how things look on the series, while Miep is very worried about whats going on Mr. Frank takes it like this is nothing new to him.

On afternoon at work, Mr. Frank calls Miep to his office, he wanted to talk to her about a serious matter, I thought she was going to be fired at first mainly because of the decline in the economy, I thought Mr. Frank was going to giver her a speech about how bad things are for the business and had to let her go, as I usually do never research a series before start watching it, I prefer to be surprise and go through the experience to then build and opinion, I didn’t know Mr. Frank would have to go hiding and it was the main context of the series, he had to rush into hiding because Margot was selected to work on a German camp, that afternoon he explain Miep how he and his family has to hide and that he choose her to help them get food and medicine while they hide to protect his daughter, she immediately say yes and this brings her a few inconvenience at home with her now husband Jan who think it was very selfish from her to take such decision without consulting him first, Miep thinks she didn’t have to as it is the right thing to do, help Mr Frank and his family but it doesn’t only put them both at risk but anyone who is related to them, friends and family, plus the entire hustle that is moving all the Frank’s stuff to the hiding place, transport Margot without letting the Germans take her, getting them food, eventually Jan agree to help Miep after all he loves her and knows its the right thing to do.

Usually on this World War II theme series Germans have lots of spies and I think Miep’s friend Tess is one of them, one night after they meet for dinner she kept talking about the matter, how Jews are hiding and specially ask for Mr. Frank but Miep has very clear she cant tell anyone, eventually she tells Jan but she cant hide it from him, she lives with the man, is her husband but besides Jan she understood she cant trust anyone including Tess, I have a feeling eventually Tess sell them out.

A Small Light is a very entertaining drama based on real events, there is suspense and drama all the time, we will have moments almost on every episode where some one is on the edge to be discover, betrayed, arrested or kill since what they were doing was totally illegal and goes against the German rules, again I don’t know how accurate this series is to the real life events but its very interesting so far, production, cast, scenery, everything looks very high quality in terms of the film, 8/10 is a no brainier for this mini series.
