Shogun Episode 8, The Abyss of Life, does honor its name when we see so many people willing to die for honor while others didn’t run away but did have different opinion on what was next for them going against everything they have work on that is the case of Hiromatsu who have decided to honor his word and everything that he have work on during his entire life but on the other hand his grandson Buntaro believe that if he must die will not be because Toronaga gave up, its a bit contradictory since when they escape Osaka he was the last man standing on land left alone but I guess one thing is to fight for your life knowing you most likely will be killed and the other one is die just because Toronaga surrender, meaning let other man kill you willingly.

A very interesting episode with a bit of gore, lot of mind games but not everything was intentional, on episode 7 Toronaga’s son Nagakado died after he slipped and crack his back head while trying to kill his uncle Saeki, after Nagakado failed attempt Saeki gather his men and took control of the situation going back to the original dilemma, Toronaga having to surrender but after his son died there was a variable and it was time, this gave Toronaga 49 days, the customary time to bury his son and go through all the traditional ceremony, enough time for Toronaga to think how could he save his clan, if you have been watching the series you know he can’t die yet so something or some one was going to act in favor of him.

Toronaga and what is left of his men go back to Edo to bury his son and gather things up before going to Osaka and meet Ishido to surrender but what was strange to me that all of the sudden Toronaga is ill badly, coughing all the way and looking pale. Everyone next to him does not want to surrender, they want to fight even when they are out number but Toronaga is Lord, they must obey his command, honor is above everything at least until this point in time.

I really though we would see more of a romantic scenario between Mariko and John at this point, if they really slept together but she have kept her boundaries in and out of home this shows how much different Japanese culture is than others, it is script to every single dot. The other couple on the horizon is Ishido and Lady Ochiba, he has really been falling for her and it seems for ever even when Taiko was alive, the reason I would think this is because he has done what ever she wanted, this entire plan to destroy Toronaga is her doing although he is no stranger of power hungry, Ishido now feels his plan will finally be accomplished so the final nail on the coffin would be marry Lady Ochiba who is the mother of the heir, this will provide Ishido enough power to act and do what ever he wants and he would probably be turn into the temporary ruler of Japan but I’m not sure if she is not measuring this correct because that means he could also kill the heir.

Before they cremate Nagakado, all Toronaga’s Vassal join at night to drink sake, talk and remember what a good guy Nagakado was, he was still a boy eager to show up he could be more, learning from his mistakes who was not willing to let his father die just because someone was trying to bully him over power but to be honest what a stupid and unfortunate way of dying, the guy slipped the last second when he had Saeki in the ground about to cut his head off, falls on his back and crack the back of his head against a rock dying almost immediately. That night and day after during the funeral ceremony, most of Toronaga’s vassal didn’t want to die nor surrender, they wanted to at least die fighting but this meant going against their lord will.

This is the scene that got me thinking something was fake, most likely Toronaga was fake, Father Martin decides to visit Toronaga before he goes to Osaka to advice him to form and alliance with Lady Ochiba and take off power from Ishido, I really think he doesn’t understand the situation very well since she is the one pushing Ishido to finish Toronaga, Ishido is enemy with Toronaga for power but she purely hates him. Martin came to bargain with Toronaga for land, he wanted to build a church in Edo, towards he end Toronaga agree but not before one last request “That he return to Osaka and tell what he sees there” Toronaga basically wanted Martin to be his messenger and tell others how sick he is and that for real this time he will surrender, I don’t know Rick, looks fake to me.

After Toronaga sends back Martin to Osaka, Hiromatsu kinda read his intentions and told every other vassal that Toronaga is going to fight, there is something going on, this includes his grandson Buntaro who is a great warrior loyal warrior who does fear death. He has been trying to work things out with Mariko after he beat her up one night a few episodes ago because he was jealous of John and her, Mariko has been playing her role of wife as Toronaga commands her. Buntaro invites her to drink tea with him, same as when John flatter Kiku when she was serving him tea its very similar to Buntaro preparing tea for Mariko its an entire ceremony. After Mariko congratulate him for his performance he had the great idea to ask her to both die that night, told her he doesn’t believe what Hiromatsu is saying and that he finally will let her have what she was asking for all this time, die. One thing is that a foreigner like John ask them to act against Toronaga but another is that a “warrior” like him ask Mariko to go against her lord, he really show his hand this time and to make things worst for him Mariko ask her many times to let her die because she never wanted to be with him but dying was the only honorable way because she would not divorce him or leave him, that would not only make her look bad but also go against what her father wanted her to do.

Talk about honor and going against their lord will, John goes to Yabushigue to fight for him and Yabushigue refuses ironically because he wants to serve Toronaga and cant go against his orders, the man that was playing double agent for the most part of the series and that he would let it slide because he is a foreigner. Most at this point not clue if to follow Toronaga to death, they all want to die fighting if necessary, even young Omi feels there is a point of return in loyalty, when it takes you no where or even takes you to die in vane.

As always without intentions to spoil the meat and potatoes of the episode I try mainly to talk about the base and structure of events that let to the results of this episode, Toronaga is taking whats left of his army and warriors to the edge mainly for many reasons, to find out who are the loyal ones, to find out who are willing to fight even when out number and even those who would try to take advantage of his situation to gain power over him like Martin did asking for land when he knows Toronaga is about to die but had no clue he was just another pawn on his entire plan, another great episode and I just hope we get two episodes of battle, there are only two episodes left and this is suppose to be a mini series so one episode of battle in my opinion would not be enough to satisfy most viewers.

It is the first episode that you can point out as a “slow” episode but what is slow for this mini series? I don’t think it was compared to how other series slow down to then ramp up to full rush of dopamine, how long will it be until we have this great battle so it is understandable that on episode 7 things pause for a bit.

Toronaga and what is left of his army go to his younger brother Saeki for help, usually this kind of reunion after so long time no seen don’t go to well for the one asking for help, at first everything look smooth but it was very predictable, I think this also depends on how much time you spend watching TV Series, for me well you can tell this is something I do on a daily bases so thinking about the possible outcomes before they happen is a common almost automatic thing while watching the series and it was not boring because of how much interesting is the entire Samurai theme for me but I guess if this series was about something else this could have turn into a boring episode.

Take this scene for example, Toronaga just won his first battle at the age of twelve years old, 46 years ago; meaning his age at the time of the series is about 58 years. He has won his first battle and was about to behead his contrary, they didn’t show this scene when he cuts his head off but I truly doubt this was a single clean cut because of how difficult it must be, the talent and the strength need is impressive and a kid of 12 most likely wont have those two, I also assume this story would be brought to light by his brother, not directly him but when I saw it I was like…hhmmm this will be mention latter on.

Saeki look very happy to have his brother asking for his help, like if he finally felt he was useful to his brother, the reason I though this could be possible “Honor & Pride” as a younger brother you always look up to your older brother but I also though he could just be a sneaky bastard laying a trap for Toronaga an everyone next to him.

John keeps going up in the ranks and this gives him more reasons to question Toronaga, he feels everything he has been giving means nothing just to keep him “happy” another pawn in the Toronaga strategy so either he is truly in and respected as a free men or he is allow to get out of Japan with his ship. This last part is very important because I have a feeling that he will once again save Toronaga ass, on this scene he says tells Toronaga he is down with him to whatever happens, trying to tell him he will go to the end of this war with him to prove his loyalty. Mariko is also no treating him anymore like a kid who doesn’t know their culture or indirectly make fun of him, this means she sees him more like a man who she might start to respect soon, only three more episodes to go.

From all the women on the series my favorite character is Usami Fuji, I don’t know Japanese culture so sometimes I write about her calling her Usami but then her grandfather called her Fuji when he arrive? …anyways Fuji is my favorite, always so cute, polite, loyal, her grandfather Hiromatsu, tell her how clean and tight is her place that house does look like a Japanese dream house everything so neat, its like been on a five star hotel with the entire Japanese house on the mountain side.

Sadly Fuji still wants to die, Hiromatsu brought her the ashes of her husband and son after he had to commit Seppuku killing himself and his only son, this broke Fuji heart but she was order to live and be John consort, she agree to do this for six month and then she would kill herself as there is nothing that matters for her its hard to imagine anyone can live under this condition and still laugh and look like she does.

The night has come and as I expected Saeki had everything planned, he already had an offer from Ishido to become a Regent and form part of the Council so he never had the intention to join forces with his brother, now he has them trapped, the entire town is surrounded with no where to escape, my description might be too simple but in fact that is how it is, that night they had some Sake and tell a few stories but everything went south when Saeki disrespect Toronaga in front of everyone, that was the catalyst to understand he have betrayed his brother.

Even Yabushige plans have fall down, he was a pawn for both sides, useful until he was not anymore, both Ishido and Toronaga knew he was playing the double agent game. Behind Toronaga’s back he send a messenger to try to make peace between both sides or at least cut a deal that favor him but this messenger was beheaded and send on a box back to Yabushige. He thinks that every since he met John his life turn to shit, he has been three times already close to die since they met, at Osaka, at Izu when he fall down the cliff, during the earthquake and now they about to be killed, its kinda true because if Toronaga have never use John at Osaka he would probably be dead by now and Yabushige at that time had a better understanding with Ishido, so yeah John had to do with Yabushige current situation.

This is probably the best mini series I have ever seen and one of the best series over all, been this episode a slow one it was still good, if I have to rate it this is a solid 8/10, as always I skipped the part with all the action to avoid spoil it that much but if you haven’t seen the episode just by reading this post you can imagine what comes next. I seriously doubt Toronaga and John were so easy to catch, they surely have something planned or this is the time John stops following orders and save Toronaga ass once more, if he could get back to his ship he could do some serious damage from far, next episode is going to be awesome because we are back at square one, Toronaga is trapped with no where to go so he has to find some sort of procedure impediment for Saeki to take him to Osaka or someone has to safe him.
